B = beg color yarn; C = contrasting color yarn

When changing colors, yarn over hook with new color and draw through last loops of last st of old color (loop on hook is ready to begin new color). When working with two colors of yarn, work over color not in use.

Square: Make 36 beg with dark color yarn and 36 beg with light color yarn.

Rnd 1: With B (rotate beg color of squares on strip, rotate beg square of each strip) ch 2, 8 sc in second ch from hook.

Rnd 2: Picking up back loop only of all sts on this and following rnds, 3 sc in beg sc, *changing to C, 3 sc in next st (working over yarn not in use), changing to B, 3 sc in next st, repeat from * twice, changing to C, 3 sc in last st.

Rnd 3: Sc in first st (each rnd proceeds in a spiral), *changing to B, sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st (C on last rnd), changing to C, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, repeat from * three times. [Each side has 4 sts each color, 32 sts total.]

Rnd 4: Sc in first B sc on last rnd, *changing to B, sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc next st (C on last rnd), changing to C, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts, repeat from * three times. [Each side has 5 sts each color, 40 sts total.]

Rnd 5: Sc in first B sc on last rnd, *changing to B, sc in each of next 4 sts, 2 sc next st (C on last rnd), changing to C, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 4 sts, repeat from * three times. [Each side has 6 sts each color, 48 sts total.]

Rnd 6: Sc in first B sc on last rnd, *changing to B, sc in each of next 5 sts, 3 sc next st (C on last rnd), changing to C, 3 sc in next st, sc in each of next 5 sts, repeat from * three times. [Each side has 8 sts each color, 64 sts total.]

Rnd 7: Sc in first B sc on last rnd, *changing to B, sc in each of next 7 sts, 3 sc next st (C on last rnd), changing to C, 3 sc in next st, sc in each of next 7 sts, repeat from * twice; changing to B, sc in each of next 7 sts, 3 sc in next st (C on last rnd), changing to C, 3 sc in next st, sc in each of next 6 sts, sl st in next st, cut yarn, leaving a 12 inch tail of both B and C yarn, and fasten. Pull gently at outside edges and corners in opposite direction from crochet to shape spiral into a flat square. [Each side has 10 sts each color, 80 sts total.]

Joining: Join squares as they are completed by whipstitching together top of square to bottom of last square picking up back loops only. Use tails of similar color to join each one half of side. Make 8 strips 9 squares long. Join strips together using yarn of similar color (first half of first square on strip in first color, *second half of square, plus joining, plus first half of next square in second color, repeat from * to end square; join second half of last square.)

Edging:

Rnd 1: With right side facing, using B, make a slip knot on hook and join with an sc to outside edge of afghan on B portion of square, picking up both loops of all sts on this and following rnd, sc in each B st on square, changing to C, sc in each C st (working over yarn not in use), changing to B, sc in each B st; continue around, working 2 sc in each of 2 corner sts (times 4 corners) and working 1 st in each joining, to end, sl st in beg sc, ch 1.

Rnd 2: Sc in first st, ch 3, sc in first ch of ch-3, sc in next st, *changing to B, sc in next st, ch 3, sc in first ch of ch-3, sc in next st, changing to C, sc in next st, ch 3, sc in first ch of ch-3, sc in next st, repeat from * around afghan to beg sc. Cut yarn and fasten.

Finishing: Weave in all loose ends.
